The Role of Free Radicals in Tumor Promotion: Oxy Radical Production by Murine Peritoneal Macrophages In Vivo in Response to Tumor PromotersDepartment of Environmental and Community Medicine University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey Robert Wood Johnson Medical School 675 Hoes Lane Piscataway, NJ 08854–5635 The studies discussed implicate the production of active states of oxygen-including free radicals in the sequence of events leading to the induction of tumors by promoters. The peritoneal macrophage system can serve as a model system for identifying promoters and antipromoters and can be a tool in studies on the mechanism of tumor promotion.
